Strengthening Disarmament Expertise

Description:

UN-LiREC elaborates and delivers a specialized disarmament course aimed at diplomats who hold positions of responsibility in the field of disarmament and security within their own Governments. This capacity-building initiative is aimed at enabling both active and future diplomats to participate more effectively in international deliberating and negotiating fora at the national, regional and international levels and at increasing their understanding of the concerns of the international community in the field of disarmament and security.

The capacity-building initiative is comprised of the following:

	Develop course curricula (adapted to the national reality of the State)
	Host a series of drafting committee meetings with specialized regional and international experts
	Undertake two-week pilot course
	Provide assistance in the elaboration of disarmament- and security-related analytical papers by students
	Publish and disseminate the analytical papers

Objectives:

	Increase the disarmament-related knowledge of governmental officials
	Enable these officials to identify the various disarmament- and security-related positions and to gain a better understanding of the concerns of the international community
	Increase the capacity of Member States to implement disarmament-related instruments
